Project Background

The client is a breeding farm owned by a seed company in Saskatchewan, requiring storage for high‑value canola and wheat breeding seeds. Internal warehouse temperature shall be kept stable at 10‑15 °C with relative humidity ≤ 50 % to avoid seed vitality degradation. Saskatchewan sees extreme winter temperatures as low as ‑40 °C, with a foundation frost depth reaching 1.8 m.

Technical Solution

• Portal steel frame with clear span of 10 m and column spacing of 5.0 m • Full‑enclosure envelope using 150 mm PIR polyurethane cold‑storage panels (walls + roof). Joints are sealed with sealant to ensure excellent overall air‑tightness. • An additional PE vapour barrier installed on the warm side of the roof to block indoor moisture vapour penetration into insulation layers • Wall‑mounted air‑conditioning system equipped (cooling & dehumidification modes), sized based on sensible heat load of 8 kW • Foundation with enhanced thermal insulation: 100 mm XPS extruded polystyrene boards beneath floor slab (extending 1.2 m outward around foundation perimeter) to break frost‑heave thermal bridges • Door: 3.0 m × 3.0 m insulated sliding door (100 mm PIR filled door panel)

Project Highlights

Full‑wrap thermal insulation plus air‑tight design delivers minimal fluctuation of internal temperature and humidity. Actual test data: under external ambient temperature of 35 °C in summer, indoor temperature can be maintained below 13 °C merely by activating dehumidification mode.
