Project Background
The client, a beef cattle farmer in Central Alberta, required storage for approximately 400 tonnes of large round hay bales to last through the winter. Alberta winters are characterized by dry conditions, strong winds, and diurnal temperature fluctuations of up to 25°C. The structure required excellent natural ventilation to prevent hay mold while also withstanding the sudden, powerful gusts of the Chinook wind.
Technical Specifications
• Large-section portal rigid frame: 12m clear span, 6.0m column spacing; eave height raised by 1m above standard (to accommodate stacking large round bales three-high).
• Roofing: 0.5mm Al-Zn coated color steel sheet; Walls: 0.4mm corrugated color steel sheet (semi-open design with a 0.6m ventilation gap below the eaves).
• Wind-resistant design: Basic wind pressure set at 0.45 kPa (including gust factor); wind-resistant clips added to all purlins.
• Fully open gable ends: 5.0m × 5.5m sliding doors on both the east and west sides, creating a through-flow ventilation channel.
• Foundation: Precast concrete pier footings with steel column base plate anchoring; column bases elevated 300mm.
